Choosing Campsites
Whenever possible, opt for established campsites and campgrounds. Bulgaria has a large number of official campsites throughout the country, and they offer basic amenities such as:
- Toilets
- Drinking water sources
- Waste disposal facilities
- Power outlets
You can reduce the environmental impact of your trip by camping in these areas instead of just camping anywhere.
If you are camping with your vehicle (caravan, minibus, car etc.), please park only in designated areas and campsites.
Also, off-road driving and overnight stays in nature reserves and national parks are not allowed. This is to prevent damage to delicate ecosystems. In Bulgaria’s protected areas ( read about Natural Reserves, National Parks and Protected Areas in Bulgaria here

Leave No Trace
One of the basic rules of responsible camping is to leave no trace. Make sure you clean up after yourself and your group.
Always pick up all litter, including food scraps, packaging and other litter. Leave your campsite as clean and tidy as you found it to preserve the cleanliness and beauty of the natural environment.
Respect the Wildlife
Bulgaria is home to a variety of wildlife and encounters with animals can be the highlight of your camping experience. However, campers should respect their habitat and behaviour.
DO NOT disturb or approach wildlife and under no circumstances should you feed them! Also, make sure your food is safely stored away from your tent or caravan/van before going to bed. This is to prevent attracting wildlife to your campsite.
Encounters with wild boars, brown bears, jackals and poisonous snakes (vipers) are common in the mountain and forest areas. Additionally, some of the animal species you may encounter in Bulgaria are endangered. For example, the Balkan lynx, the Eastern imperial eagle, the European mink, the Balkan ibex, the Dalmatian pelican or the European tree frog
Water Sources
When camping in Bulgaria, it is vital to manage your water needs properly by using clean water sources for drinking and cooking. If there is no potable water available at your campsite, bring your own.
When using natural water sources such as rivers, lakes and streams, avoid contaminating them with soap or detergents. Use biodegradable, environmentally friendly soap if necessary and dispose of wastewater away from water sources.
Campfire Safety
Campfires are a camping tradition, but their use must comply with local regulations. Follow the posted signs and signage at campsites. Some areas may restrict or prohibit open fires due to fire hazards.
Where fires are allowed, always use built-in fire rings or camp stoves. Never leave a fire unattended and extinguish it completely before leaving your campsite.
Toilet Facilities
In areas without toilet facilities, we strongly recommend that waste is disposed of properly.
Follow the Leave No Trace principle by digging a cat hole for human waste disposal. Make sure the hole is at least 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) deep. Place it at least 200 feet away from water sources.
In areas with stricter regulations, bring a portable toilet or “WAG bag” to collect waste.
Respect Local Communities
When camping near Bulgarian local communities, be respectful of residents and property owners. If you plan to camp on private land, get permission and respect their privacy and property boundaries. Keep noise levels to a minimum and follow local guidelines or regulations.
Noise and Behavior
Maintain a quiet and respectful atmosphere at your campsite, especially during quiet hours from late evening to early morning. Be mindful of other campers seeking a peaceful experience in nature. Avoid loud music and disruptive behavior that could disrupt the peace of the outdoors.
Local Permits and Regulations
Always check and follow the specific regulations of the area you plan to camp in. Some areas may require a permit or have additional rules, such as fire bans or restrictions on camping near waterways. Check online ahead of time for specific restrictions and follow the signs around the campground area you are staying in.
